How To Make Fitness A Regular Part Of My Day
Life is busy—that’s the understatement of the century. "Making" time for fitness can feel impossible. But what if fitness wasn’t just another chore? What if it became as easy a part of you life as brushing your teeth? I'll bet you don't have to make time for that. It just happens as a part of your routine. You don't think of it as a priority thing either. It just is!
The truth is, nobody makes time for fitness. Time is already there. However, there is a structure that can help you make it a part of your routine so it becomes just a part of what you do without really having to prioritize it anymore. It just is. Read to the bottom to find out how long it takes to make fitness "default". 👇👇
Why Exercise Should Be a Priority
Think of exercise as the foundation of your day. A strong foundation supports everything else. It boosts your energy, sharpens your focus, and helps you tackle life with a clear mind and strong body.
When you prioritize exercise, you’re not just burning calories—you’re fueling your ability to show up as your best self. You’ll be the parent who can keep up with (or better) their teens, the boss who leads with vitality, the professional who practices what they teach, and the friend who’s always up for adventure.
Bottom line: prioritizing exercise is the ultimate act of self-care and self-respect.
3 Mindset Shifts to Prioritize Fitness 💡
The secret to making exercise non-negotiable? It starts in your head. Here’s how to flip the mental script:
1. See Exercise as a Privilege 🎁
You don’t have to exercise—you get to exercise. Your body’s ability to move is a gift. When you approach fitness with gratitude, it shifts from “I’m too busy” to “I’m lucky I can do this and I want to do it as long as possible.”
2. Schedule It Like a Meeting 📆
Would you skip an important work meeting or date with a friend? Of course not! Treat your workouts the same way. Block off time in your calendar and protect it fiercely. That's only half of it though. Showing up and sticking to your commitments is the other half.
I get it, is my workout today at 6am more important than taking care of the kids when they get up or the work call that showed up on my calendar? No. Adjusting my schedule and following through is still following through.
3. Start Small, Stay Consistent ✔️
Forget hour-long workouts. Start with 30 minutes. The goal is consistency with small wins. If 30 minutes is all you have great! Want to maximize those 30? Explore personal training with us at FRVR. Tap here to get in touch.
Simple Strategies to Fit Exercise into Your Busy Day
1. Wake Up and Move
Morning workouts are magic. They eliminate excuses that creep in later. Here's something I heard from one of our 515am clients last week when we asked what he was happy about:
"As weird as it sounds, collective suffering. going to the gym at 5am in 30 degree weather is a lot easier when you have a group of people going through the same thing you are and I mean that in the best way possible, having a group makes the gym much more enjoyable."
The biggest hindrance to success is "I'm just not a morning person" ... and their workout gets pushed off the end of the day. Unless you have a strict routine and nothing gets in your way to workout in the evening, the best plan is to get it done in the morning.
2. Incorporate Movement Everywhere
- Walk while on phone calls or listening to podcasts
- Do squats while brushing your teeth (I haven't done this but why not?)
- Turn kids’ time into movement time- go for a walk or bike ride
Fitness doesn’t always mean a gym. It’s about finding opportunities to move.
3. Combine Social Time with Fitness
Instead of coffee dates, suggest a walk or yoga class with a friend. I hear it all the time: "I work from home and just need to get out of the house!". Having a fitness class to go to can fill a need for socializing.
Overcoming Common Excuses
“I’m too tired.”
Ironically, exercise gives you energy. A quick workout can invigorate you more than another cup of coffee. You may need to visit your bedtime routine and sleeping patterns and/or nutrition if energy is a big issue.
“I’m too busy.”
Are you really too busy, or is fitness just not a priority yet? If not that's okay! There are legitimate seasons where fitness might not be doable. It can take a lot of mental focus but it doesn't need to when you have a place to be and a workout already written for you. I'm sure there are busier people than you who stay on top of their fitness. Sure they've got it figured out by now but they didn't start there. If you want it to be a priority I hope some of this write up helps you commit to fitting it into your day.
Traveling? Every hotel I know of has a gym.
At work long hours? Your boss wants you to take a 30min walk outside or do a 15 minute interval of squats and push ups in your office.
“I don’t know what to do.”
Walk. In. To. A. Gym. It's really that simple! You'll figure it out or if you hire a coach they will tell you exactly what to do.
The Ripple Effect of Prioritizing Exercise
When you prioritize fitness, the benefits spill into every corner of your life. You’ll sleep better, manage stress like a champ, develop courage for hard things, and feel more confident in your own skin. Your kids and friends will see a role model who values health and they will want to follow you.
The best part? You’ll stop feeling like you’re just surviving your busy life. Instead, you’ll be thriving.
Start Today: A Quick Action Plan
- Set a goal. What’s your why? Is it to feel stronger? To run with your kids? To feel confident on an upcoming vacation?
- Pick a time. Morning, lunch break, evening—when will you move?
- Commit to 15 minutes or 1 session per week. Start small. Build the habit.
- Track your progress. Celebrate the wins, no matter how small.
Remember: you’re not adding fitness to your life—you’re enhancing your life through fitness.
I'm sure you know someone who just seems to stick to their fitness routine by default. You've tried several times but got derailed and haven't been back since. I said earlier ☝️☝️ there's a structure to make it such a part of your life that it just happens without it even really taking that priority status.
Studies show that it requires 24 months of consistent workouts to make fitness such a part of life that no matter what happens it's not going to get derailed. 3 months in? Keep going. 6 months in? Keep going. 1 year? Keep going. At 2 years, you will be amazed and will no longer be thinking about how to prioritize your workouts. They will just be. Time was there all along.
