How To Enjoy The Holidays Without Losing Momentum
The holiday season is a time for celebration, connection, and enjoying holiday dinners. But with the abundance of rich foods, packed schedules, and skipped workouts, it’s easy to fall out of the habits that keep you feeling good about yourself and it's easy to feel sluggish, unmotivated, and even guilty. While it’s natural to loosen the reins a little during this festive time, maintaining your routine with nutrition and fitness is essential for feeling and looking your best—not just physically, but mentally too.
Here’s how to stay on track WHILE enjoying the holidays
1. Take a long-term approach. Keep in mind that the holiday season is only 6 weeks out of the year. If you've been consistent at the gym for a while, several weeks isn't going to undo your progress. Unless you allow several missed days to turn into missed weeks and months.
2. Prioritize the basics. Movement is simple. You don't need a gym. I like to go out for a walk after meals. Drink lots of water.
3. Don't skip your morning protein and hydration. However you start your day outside of the holidays should be how you start your days during the holidays. If you skip your morning protein it's easy to overeat later.
4. Enjoy desserts and sweets but know where you're going to stop. Where I feel like I'm losing control is when I don't stay within my boundaries. Once I break one boundary it's easy to through them ALL away. Commit to yourself to eat only enough to taste and enjoy and no more.
5. Don't let other people get to your head. Sometimes I feel like friends think I'm a health freak or stuck up if I don't loosen up. Be okay with it. If staying fit was easy everyone would do it.
Why Routine is Key
1. Consistency builds confidence. A consistent mindset during the holidays helps you stay in control, even amidst the chaos. When you stick to healthy habits, no matter how basic, you’re more likely to feel proud of yourself and foster a sense of confidence. This mindset can carry over into how you approach other challenges, keeping your self-esteem high.
2. Combat the Holiday Slump. Overindulging and skipping workouts can lead to fatigue, bloating, and feelings of regret. On the other hand, staying active and eating mindfully boosts your energy, mood, and overall well-being. Sticking to a simple routine can help you avoid the dreaded post-holiday crash.
3. Avoid the "Start Over" Trap. Many people let go of their routines during the holidays, promising themselves they’ll "start fresh" in January. But that mindset often leads to overindulgence and feeling like a setback. Instead, maintaining even a simplified version of your routine allows you to head into the new year feeling strong, healthy, and ready to build on your progress. Do not cancel your gym membership! Commit to showing up again even if it's a week or two later. That's how you keep momentum.
The Mental Benefits of Staying on Track
Sticking to your nutrition and fitness routine isn’t just about physical health; it’s also about how you feel about yourself. Maintaining your habits during the holidays helps you stay centered, reduces stress, and allows you to fully enjoy the season without guilt or regret. When you feel good in your body, you show up as the best version of yourself for family, friends, and celebrations.
You don’t have to be perfect to feel good during the holidays. By staying consistent with your fitness and nutrition, even in small ways, you’ll enjoy the season more fully and enter the new year feeling strong, confident, and ready for what’s ahead.
